Reinforcement
Students are always looking for praise and positive reinforcement. Even in the beginning when sounds may not be recognizable yet, remain positive with words of encouragement such as “I’m proud of you” and “Keep up the good work”.
Some students may benefit from a reward system such as stickers or tickets to keep track of daily practice. Rewards can include a trip to the movies or a music related prize such as a trip to the music store to pick out some fun new music.
Keep an open dialogue with the private lesson teacher to check on progress. You are paying for their musical experience and expertise. They have all overcome their own practicing hurdles and have worked with many students so they will have lots of great ideas.
Attending live performances is a great way to foster a love for music as well as inspiring students to continue working hard. There are many wonderful performing groups in the area (click to go to their website):
